What to Do With Your Rep Kit

Rep kits are a great method of repairing your gear until you can get to the trailhead to have it fixed professionally. The trick is to know what to do when you need it.

Tools

Having the right tools available is essential when you are on the job. This kit is designed with that in mind and includes all the basic hand tools needed to repair items in the field. The tools are all made of steel and are the smallest amount of plastic, so they can withstand use. The kit comes complete with the coalcracker tool, a canvas zippered pouch with awl, reamer, twisted cutting shears, gimlet (5MM), sinue spools made of wood, a bottle of coalcracker tool oil, and a set of illustrated instructions.

Repair Patches

If you've got a hole or two in your gear, consider adding adhesive patches to your rep kit. These patches are made of high-performance glue already applied on a durable polyurethane back that allows a tear under pressure to heal. The patches are available in colors or clear versions and are durable against punctures as well as sun, moisture and extreme temperatures.

If your kit isn't stocked with any of the above items, consider adding a bag with waterproof Aquaseal wader repair sealant. The water-tight adhesive bonds to metals and fabrics to create an indestructible fix. This glue is ideal for fixing drysuits, and is also used in the field. Allow the sealant to cure for up to 12 hours before using your repaired gear.

The essential field fabric repair kit for nylon tents with silicone impregnated packs, rainwear, and more. It includes one Clean Tape repair patch and sil-nylon swatch. Also included is a 1/4 ounce Gore-Tex Sealant & Repair Adhesive & Brush and sealant tube. Apply patch to a clean smooth surface. Make sure there is a minimum of 1/2 inch overlap. Remove release paper from patch surface and rub adhesive using moderate finger pressure (adhesive side facing down).

Surface preparation is vital for successful repairs. Sunblock, acetone or oil on boots and shoes can cause adhesion issues. For the best results, make use of Seam Grip alone or with Cotol-240 Cure Accelerator to speed curing up to 2 hours.

Adhesive Patches

These patches are great for those who don't want sit around waiting to get back on the trail. Apply the self-adhesive patch, then apply it by rolling it around.

Use the tube-scuffer for roughening up the surface. This will assist the glue stick. Then spread a thin coating of glue on the patch to cover an area that is at least as large as the patch itself. Allow a few minutes for the glue to become tacky before pressing the patch down and holding it firmly in place.
