What to Do With Your Rep Kit

Rep kits are an excellent way to fix up your gear until you reach the trailhead and have it repaired professionally. The problem is knowing what to do with it when you require it.

Dentures that are repaired at home over a long period of time could lead to osteoporosis, irritation and tumors.

Tools

The right tools are available is critical when on the job. This kit was created with this in mind and includes all the essential hand tools needed for repairing things in the field. The tools are all made of metal and have the smallest amount of plastic, so they can withstand use. The kit avon includes the pouch made of canvas that is zippered to hold the coalcracker tools, as well as a twist awl, reamer and cutting shears and Gimlets (5MM). It also comes with a bottle of coalcracker oil with illustrated instructions, a wooden spool, a reamer, and twist an awl.

Repair Patches

If you've got a hole or two in your gears, consider adding some adhesive patches to your rep kit. These tough patches have high-performance adhesive that has been applied to a durable polyurethane backing that allows a tear to heal under pressure. Available in clear or colored options, these patches provide durability against punctures, moisture, sunlight, saltwater and temperatures that are extreme.

If your kit does not include one of the items mentioned above you might want to think about adding a waterproof Aquaseal wader sealant. This water-tight glue can be applied to plastics, fabrics, metals, and more for a permanent fix. It's perfect for repairing drysuits, and can be applied in the field. Allow the sealant to cure for at least 12 hours prior to using the repaired gear.

This kit includes one Clean Tape repair patch as well as an swatch of sil-nylon. Also included is a 1/4 ounce Gore-Tex Sealant & Repair Adhesive & Brush and sealant tube. Apply patch to clean, smooth surface. Allow a minimum 1/2 inch overlap. Release the paper and ultimate rub the adhesive side down using a moderate amount of pressure.

Surface preparation is crucial for successful repairs. Sunblock, acetone or oils on boots and shoes can affect adhesion. For the best results, make use of Seam Grip alone or with Cotol-240 Cure Accelerator to speed curing to 2 hours.

Adhesive patches

If you're out on the trail but don't have time for a full vulcanising repair, these adhesive patches will get you back in the saddle in no time. Simply roughen the tube using the included scraper, apply one of the self-adhesive patches, and apply the patch.

Clean the punctured area thoroughly, then apply the tube-scuffer, or sandpaper to roughen the surface which aids in gluing. Then spread a thin layer of glue over the patch to cover an area that is at least as big as the patch. Let the glue become tacky then press the patch down firmly and secure it.

The kit contains two adhesive-backed, clear Tenacious Tape fabric repair patches. It also includes the 1/4 ounce Seam Grip urethane sealant and repair adhesive. Perfect for reinforcing damaged tents, sleeping bags rainwear, packs, ultimate and boots.
